Keeping you in the Loop
Waters 5th/6th Grade Newsletter
April 5, 2017
Dear Parents,
During the month of April, both fifth and sixth graders will be working on and completing a book of poetry. In addition, fifth graders will be working on spelling through our Words Their Way program. Sixth graders will focus on punctuation, grammar and proofreading skills through daily language review as well as our grammar book, Thinking Through Grammar, that focuses on a sentence combining approach.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at cspfaendtner@cps.edu.

The 5th graders are creating their own countries in small groups to practice the geography skills that they learned throughout the year.
The 6th graders have chosen if they would like to teach the class about Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome. In groups of two they will be creating a newspaper and presenting it to the class.

Topics of Study:
5th Grade:
The students will be solidifying their understanding of the microscope's parts and function as they examine a strand of hair and onion skin. We will then be moving on to our study of microorganisms. Live organisms will be arriving for their viewing. We will also discuss their role in and around us.
6th Grade:
The students will be walking back in time 4.5 billion years to the birth of the Earth. We will be studying Geologic Time, the Eons, Eras, Periods and Epochs that define it. The students will begin the unit by looking back at their own history by making a personal timeline.
